Companies are beginning to measure their carbon footprints, but once the calculation is done, many companies ask themselves what the number actually means. By itself, a footprint calculation doesn’t illustrate where the company is strong or where it needs improvement.

For data to be meaningful, decision makers need to understand both absolute and relative carbon results. If a CEO hears her organization has a carbon footprint of 30,000 tonnes a year, for example, she may imagine how her customers, employees and investors may react.

But if she knew that her closest competitor’s footprint was only 20,000 tonnes, she would move quickly to find efficiencies and set goals to close the gap. In the move toward greater transparency, we expect companies will soon disclose carbon for customer, investors and other stakeholders. In the UK, grocery chains have already started to disclose the environmental footprint of products found on their shelves, allowing customers to make decisions based on comparisons.

VELO benchmarks create comparisons and help to establish goals for footprint reduction. Zerofootprint solutions keep it simple by focusing on just a few pieces of data that drive the majority of carbon emissions.

Imagine your response:

                              Your Competitor’s Footprint                                                                                          Your Footprint
