Howard students learn big lessons preparing for Lego challenge

It’s a competition that’s geared towards Grade 8 kids and older, but the Grade 4, 5 and 6 students at Howard Public School remain undeterred.

They have a secret weapon.

The elementary students have been mentored by teens in Grade 11 and 12 from Runnymede Collegiate Institute in preparation for the First Lego League’s (FLL) Power Puzzle Challenge. This is a hands-on, interactive robotics program that includes a research presentation, but takes place within a sports-like atmosphere.

Parent volunteer Yvette Jancso even likens it to a rock concert.

“I went home and I couldn’t hear anything,” she said referring to last year’s event, which garnered the school a ‘Rookie of the Year’ award. “It really is an extraordinary event.”
