“The UN’s top climate change official said on Tuesday he was confident world governments meeting in Bali next month would finally begin negotiations on mapping out a second plan to fight global warming.”
The United Nations summit on climate change will take place in Bali next month to begin negotiations on a possible extension to the Kyoto accord. Liberal Leader Stéphane Dion will be attending the summit despite the “Conservative government’s refusal to invite opposition MPs.”
“About 10,000 delegates from nearly 190 countries are in Bali today for a massive UN conference on climate change. The focus of the conference is to begin negotiations on an international agreement to fight climate change after 2012—when the first commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol expires.”
The 190 nation climate meeting in Bali saw some progress in developing a global deal to fight climate change. “Governments set up a “special group” to examine options for the planned negotiations meant to bind the United States and developing nations led by China and India more firmly into fighting climate change beyond Kyoto.”
At the Bali climate change conference, Canada, United States and Japan seem to have a similar message – “stressing that economic growth is just as valuable as the environment.”
As climate talks continue in Bali, over 200 scientists are urging governments to act quicker and to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
“After banishing environmentalists and opposition MPs from Canada’s delegation to the Bali climate conference, Ottawa has decided to allow an oil company and several business executives to join the official delegation.”
Canada’s position at the Bali Climate Change conference continues to receive criticism. Although Canada wants a deal reached by 2009, Canada refuses to bind to targets unless the U.S., China, India and other big emitters also do so.
As negotiations continue in Bali, progress is being made on forest protection issues, where financial rewards may be given to those that prevent trees being cut down.
