Escama, fish scales in Portuguese, is a trio of friends working out of apartments in San Francisco and Brasilia, Brazil. They produce stylish bags, handmade in Brazil, using 100% post-consumer recycled aluminum.
The artists producing the bags work in two craft cooperatives — Cia do Lacre and As Panteras do Lacre — located in economically depressed ‘satellite cities’ of Brasília, Brazil. The cooperatives offer women in the community a means to earn money through handicrafts and business training. They also offer a place where friends are made and self-esteem is regained.
Escama respects fair trade principles and the artists are paid fairly for their piecework. In addition, Escama donates 3% of gross annual sales directly back to the cooperatives.
