That product, which drew notice via an outline of the technology in Forbes written by Zerofootprint founder and CEO Ron Dembo, was just among the latest of dozens of initiatives the company has launched. “We’re essentially a about measurement,” Dembo says, “once you measure energy use you can see how it compares to others and actually reduce it.” The company launched as a non-profit in 2005, but launched a for-profit segment to manage its Velo carbon-footprint-measurement software two years ago. From its start in 2008, Dembo says the company has grown to 25 office staff today (noting, however, that much of the company’s work—design, manufacturing, PR — is outsourced, so employment might not be the best measure of growth). “Eseentially, in the first quarter of this year, we’ve generated as much revenue as we did in all of last year,” he says. “And back then, it was about the same—over the year before, about a factor of four. As more companies become transparent in disclosing their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) impacts to their shareholders, greater standardizing is needed. Collaboration between GRI and CDP, therefore, is an important first step. After all, GRI provides the standards for organizations by which they can perform their ESG performance; CDP scores responding companies based on their questionnaires’ responses. However essential, farming is not the most lucrative use of water. Industry generates about 70 times as much value from a litre of water as agriculture, which helps to explain why industry takes the lion’s share in most rich countries. Yet the ratio of water use to GDP has declined dramatically in many rich and middle-income countries in recent decades, which suggests that industry can use water much more productively if it tries. Unilever, a seller of soaps to soups in 170 countries, boasts that its Medusa project, formulated in Brazil in 2003, cut its total water use by 8% and reduced the load per tonne of production by 15%. SABMiller, which brews all over the world, has embarked on a programme to save a quarter of the water needed to make a litre of beer by 2015. NEW YORK, May 5, 2010 – Duke University’s commitment to sustainability continues with a $25 million renovation of its East Campus Steam Plant and conversion to natural gas boilers. For about 50 years, the plant’s coal-fired boilers supplied steam through underground pipes and tunnels to heat campus buildings until the plant closed in 1978. The new plant, complete with 15 Miura LX series gas-fired steam boilers, will provide 35 percent more steam capacity to campus, while simultaneously helping to reduce the University’s environmental footprint. The new gas boilers require less water and time to produce steam - and at lower emissions of greenhouse gases than coal. Instead of using lots of energy to fire up one to three large coal boilers, the plant can calibrate among 15 smaller gas boilers based on demand. Miura boilers feature an exclusive “once-through” design, which turns water into steam in five minutes (or less) and provides high in-service operational efficiencies “We can have them on cold standby and have them come on as necessary, which creates a significant reduction in the energy losses associated with a typical start-up, purge, and warm-up cycle of a boiler,” said Russell Thompson, director of utilities and engineering for Duke Facilities Management. There is already a working U.S. cap-and-trade system in the Northeast, although the five Western partners’ market would be roughly four times bigger when fully implemented. Cap-and-trade systems put limits on pollution—in this case, gases that suck up heat and warm the planet—which are decreased year by year. Polluters must acquire emissions credits, which can be bought and sold. If a factory can make changes to cut pollution for less than the price of a credit, it is likely to do so, then sell unneeded credits at a profit. Nearly a quarter of China’s emissions come from goods exported to the West. The report is being compiled by the United Kingdom-based environmental consulting firm Trucost, and is based on eight years of research on large companies. “It’s a kind of examination of company impacts and also impacts of supplied goods and services,” said Richard Mattison, the chief operating officer of Trucost. “Things like greenhouse gas emissions, local pollutions, particulate emissions, use of timber and water.” Mr. Mattison would not reveal what companies the report investigates, but said that it includes all 500 companies on Standard & Poor’s list of the largest publicly traded companies in the United States. I should step back and note that Zerofootprint actually lives in two worlds. In one guise, it is a Canadian software developer that sells applications for measuring energy consumption and other green metrics. But even as major manufacturers become more interested in tackling climate change, firms further down the supply chain are still far behind and need to catch up quickly, warn analysts with the Carbon Disclosure Project. The survey, conducted by the Conference Board of Canada and the Association of Corporate Travel Executives, found the number of companies in Canada who reported voluntary carbon offset programs was slashed almost in half from 2008 to 2009. The number who said they were “looking into it,” an indicator of the role of carbon offsets in the image a company is interested in conveying to the public, fell from almost half to just a third. Carbon offsetting is the practice of calculating the amount of carbon emitted by an activity (say, flying from Vancouver to Toronto or heating an office building) and paying a service to do something (say, plant trees or recycle tires) that will reduce or absorb that same amount. The founder and CEO of Zerofootprint, an organization that helps companies and individuals measure, track and offset their environmental impact, went to a technology conference in Monterey, Calif., in 2005. Among those in attendance were major players such as the founders of AOL and Google. “It was curious to me that there’s a group of people who are changing the world but consuming a lot of the world to do it,” he says. His theory applied not just to business types: “David Suzuki has got to have one of the biggest travel footprints out there, for example, but he’s doing a lot of good in the process. “I realized, here’s this immense problem but no one is using software as part of the solution. It struck me as a very interesting opportunity.” An opportunity to help the environment, yes. But it would also become a way to help companies make sustainability part of their business model. And that’s something, he says, no company can ignore. “There was a time in the corporate world where you could get away with things. Today that’s not the case.
