OTTAWA -- A World Heritage flotilla of decorated boats will be among the attractions at the inaugural edition of the Rideau Canal Festival, which runs Aug. 1-4.
The vessels will represent World Heritage sites, such as the pyramids of Egypt and the wonders of Easter Island.
The Rideau Canal is Canada's most recent UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Beginning July 26, five boats representing the five original builder groups of the Rideau will parade from Kingston, Ont., visiting communities along the canal. On Aug. 3, they will lead the World Heritage flotilla along the route between Dows Lake and the Ottawa Locks.
The Rideau Canal Festival aims to be the first "zero footprint" festival in Canada, with initiatives designed to reduce and offset greenhouse gas emissions, according to the website.
The festival has partnered with Zerofootprint, a non-profit group that helps organizations develop eco-friendly events.
